PE

What does PE look like in our ACORN curriculum – INTENT & IMPLEMENTATION

A: Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

C: We develop our sense of identity by learning to ‘Sweat, Smile and Succeed’. PE gives the confidence to know who we are as individuals and how to improve our individual talents and skills, to develop in sports and physical activity.

O: Communication is key in sport and physical teamwork activities. Verbal communication is a key skill, facilitating the POWER to succeed in PE.

R:Co-operation and collaboration is key in PE, enabling us to play our part in effective teamwork in order to … ‘Sweat, Smile and Succeed’.

N: Physical activity and teamwork enables us to develop our resilience and self-awareness. PE teaches us co-operation. Competition in PE teaches us to be aspirational and resilient. We learn to be gracious when we win and lose.

IMPACT

For 2025/26, our assessments show that children at Green Oaks Primary Academy have become more active throughout the year due to initiatives such as The Daily Mile, 30 Minutes a Day, and activities run by peer Play Leaders at lunchtimes. A wide range of extra-curricular clubs, ranging from football to gymnastics, has also enhanced children's physical activity levels.

Using Sports Premium funding, children have accessed a wide range of sporting opportunities and activities, including skateboard and scooting workshops, a Mintridge Workshop Day with a professional basketball player, sports festivals, tournaments, and outdoor and adventurous activities (OAA) through extra-curricular opportunities. Whether competing internally or externally, all children, have had the opportunity to participate in at least one sporting or PE competition this year, at an appropriate and inclusive level. Our focus on girls’ competitive sport this year has been success achieved in external KS2 rugby and netball competitions.

Teachers' subject knowledge across the school has been enhanced through a series of CPD sessions delivered by expert coaches alongside teachers during PE lessons. An enhanced PE scheme of work has also been embedded across the school. In addition, a wider range of playground and gymnastics equipment has been purchased to improve children's opportunities in PE. Children have taken part in initiatives such as Walk to School Week and Bikeability. Our prioritisation of top-up swimming lessons for Year 6 pupils has enabled additional progress in this essential area.

Identified children have developed a wide range of personal, social, team building and leadership skills through small-group extra-curricular sessions. All of our children demonstrate respect for both them and their opponents, whether winning or losing.
