Healthy Eating

At Green Oaks Primary Academy, we encourage all children to develop healthy eating habits and make positive choices about the food and drinks they bring into school.

Eating a healthy, balanced diet helps children to have the energy they need to learn, play and make the most of their school day.

Break-Time Snacks

Children may bring a healthy snack from home to eat at break time. We encourage simple, nutritious choices such as:

  • 🍎 Fresh fruit, such as apples, bananas, oranges, grapes or berries
  • 🥕 Vegetable sticks, such as carrot, cucumber or pepper
  • 🍇 Dried fruit in a small portion
  • 🥨 Plain crackers, breadsticks or rice cakes
  • 🧀 A small portion of cheese or another suitable healthy option

Children in Key Stage 1 receive a portion of fruit or vegetables in school as part of the ongoing initiative to encourage healthy eating, so families do not need to provide an additional break-time snack unless advised otherwise.

What Should Children Not Bring?

To help us maintain a consistent approach to healthy eating across the school, children should not bring the following items for break-time snacks or as drinks during the school day:

  • ❌ Chocolate
  • ❌ Sweets
  • ❌ Fizzy drinks
  • ❌ Energy drinks

We encourage children to drink water regularly throughout the school day, so children should bring a clearly named, reusable water bottle to school.

Healthy Lunchboxes

If your child brings a packed lunch, we encourage families to provide a balanced and varied lunchbox. This might include a sandwich or wrap, fruit and vegetables, yoghurt or another dairy option, alongside other healthy choices.

We understand that children have different tastes, dietary requirements and sensory needs. If your child has a medical, dietary, allergy or additional need that affects what they can eat, please speak to a member of the school team so that we can work with you to support them.

By working together, we can help our children develop positive attitudes towards food and healthy choices that will benefit them now and in the future.
